The Artist
“The work embodies a dynamic interplay between abstraction and representation, exploring the complexities of human experience.”
Joseph Schoenleber is an abstract expressionist painter and sculptor working in mixed media, oil, and welded steel. His studio is based in Stockton, California.
Each painting begins with a fragment of something recognizable — a figure, a shoreline, a stand of trees — pushed until it starts to lose its edges. Oil and raw pigment carry weight; torn paper and linen carry time; gold leaf, used sparingly, marks what is worth protecting.
The same instinct has moved into sculpture: steel and rubber holding cast acrylic the way a painting holds light.
